About the album

By 1977 disco ruled the dance floors and punk ruled the music papers, and the Stones had plenty of new competition. So they decamped to Pathé Marconi Studios in Paris with engineer Chris Kimsey, a stripped-down line-up and very few guests, and came back sounding hungrier than they had in years.

With a stable line-up for the first time in years, Ronnie Wood, now a full-time member, trades guitar lines with Keith Richards, and Mick Jagger soaks up everything around him. "Miss You" glides on a disco pulse with Sugar Blue's harmonica, "When The Whip Comes Down" and "Respectable" snap with punk energy, "Faraway Eyes" detours to a Bakersfield honky-tonk, "Beast Of Burden" is pure easy soul, and Keith takes the mic for "Before They Make Me Run." Their take on The Temptations' "Just My Imagination" is a highlight too.

The sessions were so productive that outtakes kept turning up on Stones albums for years. Jagger and Richards produced it as the Glimmer Twins, a name that has always sounded like a magic act, and in Paris that winter the trick worked.
