Rob Zombie's 2001 second solo album The Sinister Urge, horror-soaked industrial metal with "Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy)" and "Feel So Numb."
This audiophile vinyl edition is the album's first time back on wax since 2001. It reached the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 and went platinum, and "Demon Speeding" became his third Top 20 hit on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
Rob Zombie named his second solo album after a 1960 Ed Wood crime picture, which tells you roughly where his video shelf begins. Three years after Hellbilly Deluxe, he and co-producer Scott Humphrey kept the B-movie atmosphere and leaned harder on the beats. Like its predecessor, it threads horror-film imagery and suspense through both the lyrics and the music.
"Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy)" heads for the dance floor, "Dead Girl Superstar" and "Feel So Numb" went out as promo singles, and "Scum of the Earth" turned up on the Mission: Impossible 2 soundtrack. "Transylvanian Transmissions Pt. 1" sets a suitably spooky mood, and the closer, "House of 1000 Corpses," shares its name with the horror film Zombie was making at the time. "Iron Head" and "(Go to) California" keep the riffs heavy, and "Bring Her Down (To Crippletown)" stomps.
Songs from it went on to soundtrack plenty of TV shows and films, and a whole electro-industrial tribute album covered his work in 2002. Nearly two million copies sold worldwide, and every one of them, we suspect, played louder than the neighbours would have liked.
