The best of R.E.M.'s BBC sessions and concerts, recorded between 1984 and 2008, from Nottingham to Glastonbury.
Twenty-four years of R.E.M. on the BBC, from scrappy college-rock days to festival-headlining giants, in one handpicked set.
The BBC caught R.E.M. at just about every stage of their career, and this set skims the cream. It's drawn from the band's eight-disc BBC box, gathering studio sessions and live broadcasts recorded between 1984 and 2008.
There are full-band concert moments from Nottingham in 1984, Milton Keynes in 1995 and a mighty Glastonbury set in 1999, alongside sessions for John Peel, Mark and Lard, Drivetime and the Radio 1 Live Lounge. Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry (and later the trio) sound loose, warm and fully in their element.
Drowned in Sound called the full box a useful document of R.E.M.'s whole career; this best-of is the handy way in. It's the band you know from the records, only with the windows rolled down.
