![R.E.M.: Green [WARNER BROS.]](https://cdn.shoplightspeed.com/shops/621399/files/42748806/1652x1652x2/new-vinyl-rem-green-warner-bros.jpg)
R.E.M.'s 1988 major-label debut Green, the record that made them arena stars: "Orange Crush," "Stand," "Pop Song 89" and "Get Up."
Green turned R.E.M. from college radio heroes into a stadium band, and "Stand" and "Orange Crush" are among their most beloved singles.
Moving from I.R.S. to Warner Bros. could have smoothed out R.E.M.'s edges. Instead they got playful, swapping instruments, bringing in mandolin and writing deliberately bright major-key rock songs alongside quieter, stranger ones.
"Pop Song 89" opens with a wink, "Get Up" is giddy and catchy, "Stand" is a bubblegum gem with a wah-wah solo, "Orange Crush" marches with a political punch, and "You Are the Everything" and "The Wrong Child" glow with mandolin and acoustic warmth.
Produced by the band with Scott Litt, Green set up an 11-month world tour and the global breakthrough of Out of Time. It's R.E.M. at their most joyous and adventurous.
