Rancid have never been a band for long goodbyes. Six years after Trouble Maker, Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen, Matt Freeman and Branden Steineckert came back with Tomorrow Never Comes, produced once again by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz, who has steered most of their records. This time they left the ska at the door and played it straight, loud and quick.
The title track came first, followed by "Don't Make Me Do It," with a video Armstrong co-directed with Kevin Kerslake, and the stomping "Devil In Disguise." "New American" and "Live Forever" got videos of their own, and "Drop Dead Inn," "Hellbound Train" and "When The Smoke Clears" keep the pace up on side two. On vinyl, "The Bloody & Violent History" swaps places with the title track and kicks things off, and the whole album wastes no time getting to the point.
They took it straight out on a European and UK tour the week it arrived. At 28 minutes and 47 seconds it's the shortest album they've made, so you can play it twice before the kettle has lost interest.
