About the album

Rammstein's thunderous fourth album was made somewhere surprisingly sunny: El Cortijo Studio in Málaga, Spain, from November 2003, with drums tracked at Studios 301 in Stockholm, mixing at Toytown Studio in Stockholm, and an orchestra and choir recorded in Berlin. The sessions produced so much material that the band first planned a double album, and the overflow later became Rosenrot.

Jacob Hellner co-produced again, and the record pairs the band's trademark pounding riffs with bigger melodies and orchestral sweep. The title track borrows its seafaring imagery from Moby-Dick, "Dalai Lama" resets Goethe's poem "Der Erlkönig" on a turbulent aeroplane, "Amerika" pokes fun at cultural Americanization with an English chorus, and "Ohne dich," a song that dates back to the Mutter sessions, is one of their most aching ballads. "Mein Teil" stirred up the German press and climbed to No. 2 in the German singles chart, and "Keine Lust" stomps along as the fourth single.

A look behind the scenes of the sessions turned up on the 2006 live set Völkerball. Turning a Goethe ballad into an in-flight drama is also, we're told, an excellent way to get a teenager through German class.
