About the album

Josh Homme says he got interested in dancing, and that's how Queens of the Stone Age ended up working with Mark Ronson, the producer behind Bruno Mars' biggest hit. The guitars still have that limber crunch, but on Villains they ride disco beats, chilly synths and a swing that makes the whole thing move from the hips.

"Feet Don't Fail Me" builds from an a cappella intro into a full-on strut, "The Way You Used To Do" is a rockabilly stomp with handclaps, and "The Evil Has Landed" piles riff on riff. "Villains of Circumstance," first aired by Homme at an acoustic show in 2014, closes the album with a big, aching sway. It was the first QOTSA album with Jon Theodore as full-time drummer, and the second chapter of a Matador trilogy that started with ...Like Clockwork.

Several of these songs had been bubbling for years before Ronson got hold of them, and the band toured the album around the world. Turns out stoner rock and a dance floor get along famously, provided nobody asks the guitarist to wear sequins.
