About the album

Most songwriters reach for a guitar; PJ Harvey reached for an autoharp and a history library. She spent two and a half years writing the words first, reading about Gallipoli and gathering testimonies from soldiers and civilians, then set them to music and recorded the lot in five weeks in a church in Dorset. Harold Pinter and T.S. Eliot were on her reading list, and it shows in the words.

John Parish, Mick Harvey and Flood helped her produce it, with Harvey drawing the artwork herself. "The Last Living Rose" is a strange, tender love letter to England, "The Glorious Land" borrows a bugle call, and "The Words That Maketh Murder" pairs a jaunty tune with images of the battlefield. "On Battleship Hill," "England" and "Written on the Forehead" carry the album's haunted, folk-tinged glow through to "The Colour of the Earth."

It also took the Uncut Music Award and the Ivor Novello Award for album of the year. A war record you can whistle, which is a trick very few people have ever pulled off.
