Phantogram's 2010 debut Eyelid Movies on clear with yellow swirl vinyl, dreamy beats and big hooks: "When I'm Small" and "Mouthful of Diamonds."
This Barsuk reissue puts the duo's debut on clear vinyl with a yellow swirl. Eyelid Movies earned a Metacritic score of 76 and introduced the hip hop-meets-shoegaze sound Phantogram built a career on.
Phantogram started in a barn in upstate New York, which isn't where you'd expect to find a sound this nocturnal. Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, friends since childhood, mixed chopped-up hip hop beats, fuzzy guitars and glittering synths into something that feels like a late-night drive with the radio on.
Carter produced the album himself, and the two trade vocals across it. "Mouthful of Diamonds" opens with a crisp, swaying groove, "When I'm Small" is the sultry calling card, "Running from the Cops" and "As Far as I Can See" shimmer, and "You Are the Ocean" and "10,000 Claps" lean into the dreamier end of things.
Absolute Punk called it a collection of songs primed for in-the-dark listening, and BBC Music gave it eight out of ten. A barn in upstate New York turns out to be an excellent place to make music for city nights.
