About the album

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe named it Please so people could walk into a record shop and ask for "the Pet Shop Boys album, please." They had been writing together for three years by the time Parlophone signed them in 1985, and the debut shows it.

They chose producer Stephen Hague after he slowed "West End Girls" down, made it moodier and added that street-sound intro, and the rest of the album followed in ten weeks at Advision Studios in London. The songs run as a loose story: "Two Divided By Zero" runs away, "West End Girls" arrives in the city, "Opportunities" wants to make money, "Love Comes Quickly" falls in love, "Suburbia" moves out, and "Why Don't We Live Together?" ties it up.

Italian disco, early hip-hop and Bobby Orlando's lo-fi dance records all fed the sound, with Tennant's wry lyrics on top. It's synth-pop with a novelist's eye. The title trick still works at our counter, and we do appreciate the manners.
