About the album

Most OVO albums come with a guest list. PartyNextDoor 4 has none at all. The Mississauga singer, songwriter and producer came back after four years with a record that's entirely his own voice, picking up the numbered series he started with PartyNextDoor 3 back in 2016. Chris Athens mastered it, and the whole thing runs as one long, seamless mood.

Party produces alongside 40, Cardiak and OG Parker, and 40 mixed the whole album, so it has that late-night, smoky Toronto sound. "Her Old Friends" and "Resentment" arrived as singles well ahead of the album, "Real Woman" is a slow, swaying highlight, and "Lose My Mind" and "For Certain" show how well he can do moody, melodic R&B. Every track title is letter-spaced on the sleeve, a typically stylish touch, and "Resentment" closes the album on a sombre, reflective note.

Clash called it a cohesive, alluring set where each song speaks to the next. Not a single guest verse, mind you; for an artist called PartyNextDoor, that's admirable commitment to a quiet night in.
