Panda Bear's 2007 sample-built masterpiece Person Pitch, half-speed mastered at Alchemy in a gatefold jacket with a poster: "Comfy in Nautica," "Bros" and "Take Pills."
Domino's reissue was half-speed cut at Alchemy Mastering and comes in a gatefold jacket with a poster. Person Pitch drew universal acclaim, turned up on several top-10-of-the-decade lists, and shaped a whole wave of indie music, chillwave included.
When Noah Lennox moved to Lisbon, customs held onto his guitar. What made it through was a Boss SP-303 sampler, and with it the Animal Collective member built an album out of loops, samples and wave upon wave of his own layered voice.
He nearly called it Perfect Pitch, and worked on it slowly over two years between tours, inspired by Madlib and by dance producers like Basic Channel who issued music as a run of 12-inch singles. Five of the seven tracks came out that way first. "Comfy in Nautica" is a sunlit chant, "Take Pills" drifts on hazy harmonies, the 12-minute "Bros" rolls like the sea, and "Good Girl/Carrots" and "Ponytail" carry the album home. He described the songs as sugary and sunny, shaped by his marriage, fatherhood and new life in Portugal.
Lennox estimates it's "like 96% samples, 10% of which I actually played," with sources running from Kylie Minogue and Lee "Scratch" Perry to the 14th-century composer Guillaume de Machaut. Agnes Montgomery made the cover from a doctored photo out of a 1969 National Geographic. We play it in the shop on grey February afternoons, and it works rather better than the heating.
