Oneohtrix Point Never's 2013 Warp debut R Plus Seven as a 2LP set in a gatefold jacket, Daniel Lopatin's shimmering album of synth presets and choirs.
This 2LP set comes in a matte gatefold jacket with a download card. R Plus Seven was Daniel Lopatin's first album for Warp, it drew wide critical acclaim and landed on year-end lists across the music press.
Most electronic musicians spend years trying to escape the cheesy factory presets on their keyboards. Daniel Lopatin went the other way. On R Plus Seven he dove straight into MIDI instruments, 1980s synth patches and software plug-ins, the sounds most producers skip past, and found something strange and beautiful in them. It was also the first Oneohtrix Point Never record made without his trusty Roland Juno-60.
The album moves in short scenes rather than grooves. "Boring Angel" rises on a churchy organ, "Americans" and "Problem Areas" stutter and sparkle, "Zebra" flickers like a channel being changed, and "Still Life" and "Chrome Country" close things out with an eerie, almost sacred calm. Lopatin produced and mixed it with Paul Corley, using procedural composing methods and spoken-word samples, and worked with visual artists Jon Rafman, Takeshi Murata and Nate Boyce on pieces to go with it. The cover is a still from George Schwizgebel's 1982 animated film Le ravissement de Frank N. Stein.
Lopatin later called it a calm record about domestic bliss. In our house that mostly sounds like the kettle, so we're glad he got there first.
