About the album

Leeds producer George Evelyn, aka DJ E.A.S.E., started Nightmares On Wax as a breakbeat crew, and by the mid-90s he had slowed everything right down. Recorded across Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds, Smokers Delight swaps the rave for a long, warm Sunday morning of dub, soul and hip-hop, and it became one of Warp's defining records.

Evelyn digs deep in the crates for his samples: Quincy Jones's "Summer In The City" drifts through "Nights Introlude," The Dells turn up on "Me + You," and Smokey Robinson's "Just My Soul Responding" underpins "(Man) Tha Journey." "Dreddoverboard" floats on a dub bassline, "Pipes Honour" and "Groove St." roll along at a gentle head-nod, and "Rise" lifts the last side.

Thirty years on, it still sounds like the coolest room in the house. We put it on in the shop at closing time and people have been known to forget they were leaving.
