Neil Young's long-lost mid-'70s album Homegrown in the Neil Young Archives series, with "Separate Ways" and "Love Is A Rose."
This Neil Young Archives series LP is mastered from the original analogue tapes, with a printed inner sleeve of songs and credits. Young calls Homegrown the link between Harvest, Comes a Time, Old Ways and Harvest Moon.
The cover art was done. The running order was set. Then, at a playback party in 1975, Neil Young heard Tonight's the Night on the same reel and decided to put that out instead. Homegrown went back on the shelf, where it stayed for 45 years until the Neil Young Archives brought it home in 2020.
Recorded between June 1974 and January 1975, after On the Beach and before Zuma, it's mostly Young alone with guitar and harmonica, with sessions in Nashville, Los Angeles, London and at his Broken Arrow Ranch. Ben Keith, Elliot Mazer and Tim Mulligan share production. "Separate Ways" opens with a gentle farewell to his relationship with actress Carrie Snodgress, "Love Is A Rose" is a bright little country gem, and "Try," "Mexico" and "Little Wing" are as tender as anything he ever cut. "Star Of Bethlehem" closes it with hushed harmony.
It's the album exactly as he sequenced it in 1975, a warm and intimate snapshot of a songwriter at his most open. Forty-five years in the drawer, which is still not the record for how long a Kops staffer has meant to alphabetize the Y section.
