About the album

Natalie Cole spent the first part of her career making her own name in soul and R&B, very deliberately away from her father's shadow. Then, on her first album for Elektra, she walked straight into it and sang the songs Nat King Cole had made famous. It turned out to be the comeback of the decade.

Twenty-two standards get swinging big-band and lush orchestral settings, from "The Very Thought of You" and "Mona Lisa" to "Orange Colored Sky," "Nature Boy" and "Straighten Up and Fly Right." Her uncle Ike Cole plays piano, Tommy LiPuma steered things as executive producer, and the closing "Unforgettable" blends her voice with her father's original recording into a duet that collected three more Grammys on its own. "L-O-V-E," "Route 66" and "Our Love Is Here to Stay" keep the mood bright, while "Lush Life" and "Tenderly" slow things to a candlelit glow.

It swept the pop, jazz and R&B markets at once and also picked up a Soul Train Music Award. Her father's voice joins hers decades after he sang the song; the rest of us still can't get our dads to answer a text.
