MUNA's self-titled 2022 album on Saddest Factory, with "Silk Chiffon" featuring Phoebe Bridgers, "Anything But Me" and "Kind of Girl."
This LP comes with a printed inner sleeve and a digital download. The album scored a Metacritic 82 and became MUNA's first to chart on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart.
Some bands mark a fresh start with a new sound; MUNA marked theirs by naming the album after themselves. Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson signed to Phoebe Bridgers' Saddest Factory imprint in 2021, toured with Bridgers and Kacey Musgraves, and came back with a buoyant duet with Bridgers whose video tips its hat to But I'm a Cheerleader.
The band produced it themselves, and Gavin says the sound explodes in a ton of directions. "Anything But Me" bounces with 80s energy, "Kind of Girl" goes full Western ballad (the trio dressed as cowboys for the video), "Runner's High" is garage-house disco, "Solid" has a glam rock edge and "Home By Now" aches in all the right places. "What I Want" is a dancefloor declaration of independence.
Beats Per Minute heard it as a loose concept piece, following a relationship from first sparks through the breakup and the slow rebuild, and The Line of Best Fit gave it a perfect ten. For the friend who still has "Silk Chiffon" on every playlist, this is the polite way to suggest they hear the other ten songs.
