Moby's 1999 breakthrough Play as a 2LP set, with "Porcelain," "Natural Blues," "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" and "South Side."
This 2LP set comes in a pocket sleeve with pictured inner sleeves. Play sold over 12 million copies worldwide, went platinum in more than 20 countries, and Rolling Stone ranked it among the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Moby planned Play as his farewell album. After the guitar-heavy Animal Rights left him thinking about quitting music, he went back to his home studio in Manhattan and started building tracks around old field recordings and gospel records, pairing century-old voices with breakbeats, pianos and strings.
Vera Hall's "Trouble So Hard" becomes "Natural Blues," Bessie Jones's "Sometimes" drives the opener "Honey," and Bill Landford & the Landfordaires turn up on "Run On." "Bodyrock" borrows from Spoony G & the Treacherous Three, while "Porcelain" and "South Side," where Moby sings himself, show a softer, more melancholy side. "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" might be the most moving thing he has ever made, a gospel cry looping over a lonely piano.
It was a slow burner that topped charts months after it arrived and stayed there for two years, helped along by songs licensed to more films, TV shows and adverts than anyone could count. If you've been in a shop, a lift or a car showroom since 1999, you've heard this record; this is your chance to hear it on purpose.
