Meshuggah's 1995 album Destroy Erase Improve, newly remastered for its 30th anniversary as a 2LP set on gray, black & white marble vinyl, limited to 2,500 copies.
This 30th anniversary edition is newly remastered and spread over three sides of gray, black & white marble vinyl, with an etched fourth side, in a gatefold limited to 2,500 copies worldwide. It keeps the original artwork and marks the record where the Swedish band's machine-like precision fully clicked into place.
Every so often a heavy band works out something nobody else has thought of yet. On their second album, Meshuggah took thrash as their starting point and bent it into strange new shapes: dissonant riffs, rhythms that loop against the beat with clockwork precision, and touches of jazz fusion in the cleaner passages and solos.
They co-produced it with Daniel Bergstrand, and it comes out of the gate swinging with "Future Breed Machine," the track chosen to herald this remaster. "Beneath," "Soul Burn" and "Transfixion" grind and lurch with real menace, "Acrid Placidity" offers a moody, clean-toned breather, and "Inside What's Within Behind," "Suffer in Truth" and "Sublevels" push the technical control even further. It's tight, punishing and oddly hypnotic all the way through.
It's long been counted among the defining metal records of the 1990s and the blueprint for everything they built next. The band's name is Yiddish for crazy, which for a group this precise is a rather nice joke.
