About the album

By the end of the 90s Mariah Carey had nothing left to prove as a balladeer, so she called up the hip hop and R&B world instead. Rainbow was built mostly with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and the guest list reads like a Billboard chart from 1999: Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Usher, Missy Elliott, Da Brat, Master P, Mystikal, Joe and 98 Degrees.

"Heartbreaker" with Jay-Z was the first lead single of her career to feature another artist, and it topped the charts in Canada as well as the U.S. "Thank God I Found You" with Joe and 98 Degrees is a big, soaring ballad, "Crybaby" with Snoop Dogg slinks, "How Much" with Usher grooves, and Diane Warren co-wrote "After Tonight." The bonus side adds the So So Def remix of "How Much" and her VH1 Divas medley of "Love Hangover" and "Heartbreaker."

It went triple platinum in the U.S. within a month and hit No. 1 in France and Greece. Twenty-five years on, the falsetto still reaches notes our turntable needle treats with some respect.
