Mariah Carey's 1992 MTV Unplugged as a remastered 12-inch EP, seven live songs including "I'll Be There," "Emotions" and "Vision of Love."
This 12-inch EP is remastered from 24-bit hi-res audio for vinyl and includes a download voucher. MTV Unplugged reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and went four times platinum in the US.
In early 1992 Mariah Carey had two blockbuster albums and almost no concerts behind her, and people had started wondering whether that voice could really be done live. She and producer Walter Afanasieff answered by booking MTV Unplugged, and on March 16, 1992, at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, she settled the matter with a band, a choir and nowhere to hide.
"Emotions" opens the set with the whistle-register notes everyone had been asking about, delivered straight, no studio tricks. "Vision of Love" and "Someday" revisit the debut, "If It's Over," which she co-wrote with Carole King, gets a gospel lift, and "Make It Happen" and "Can't Let Go" glow. The big surprise was "I'll Be There," the Jackson 5 classic, sung as a duet with her backup singer Trey Lorenz, who went from the back row to the charts overnight.
"I'll Be There" went to No. 1 in the US and Canada and became her sixth American chart-topper. Few singers have turned a television appearance into a hit record; fewer have done it while hitting notes that make the dog leave the room.
