About the album

By 1993 Mariah Carey had the five-octave voice everybody talked about. On Music Box she decided to use a bit less of it, and the restraint made her a bigger star than ever. She aimed for a warmer, radio-friendly record, with a more live-sounding production and the whistle register kept mostly in its case.

Most of the songs come from her partnership with Walter Afanasieff, with Babyface, David Cole, Robert Clivillés and Daryl Simmons adding to the mix. "Dreamlover" floats on a breezy groove and spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100, "Hero" followed it with four more, and her version of "Without You" became her most successful song around the world. "Anytime You Need A Friend" brings the gospel, and "Never Forget You" is a gorgeous slow jam. "Everything Fades Away" comes from the same era and sits at the end of side two.

It topped the charts in 17 countries. Critics have warmed to it more with every passing year. "Hero" alone has done roughly as much for school assemblies as the overhead projector.
