About the album

Most singers wait a while before asking for the keys. Mariah Carey took them on album two. Having co-written much of her debut with Ben Margulies, she wrote the lyrics to every song on Emotions and spread her wings across a wider cast of collaborators.

Ballads came from her partnership with Walter Afanasieff, while the dance tracks were built with Robert Clivillés and David Cole of C+C Music Factory, who gave the title track its gospel-disco lift and its famous whistle-register climax. "Can't Let Go" is a slow, aching ballad, "Make It Happen" is an uplifting tale of perseverance, and "If It's Over" was co-written with Carole King. "So Blessed" and "The Wind" lean toward soul and jazz.

The album went top ten across Europe, Asia and the Americas, sold more than eight million copies worldwide, and earned two Grammy nominations. Thirty-odd years on, the whistle notes remain the domestic test of whether your speakers, and your neighbours, are up to it.
