Why you'll love it

Imaginal Disk landed on loads of year-end best-of lists for 2024, a sci-fi concept album with real pop hooks: "Image", "Death & Romance", "Tunnel Vision" and "That's My Floor." There's even a companion feature film.

About the album

Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin built Magdalena Bay in their bedrooms and on the internet, and Imaginal Disk is the moment the duo went fully, gloriously maximal. It's a concept album about a character named True who has a shiny disc implanted in her forehead to make her the ideal version of herself, only for her body to reject it, and the whole thing plays like a lost '70s prog record rewired for the TikTok age.

Don't let the premise scare you off. "Image" and "Death & Romance" are as catchy as anything on pop radio, while the sprawling synth passages, sudden prog detours and Tenenbaum's airy vocals keep you leaning in. Critics loved it, the fans who discovered it never shut up about it, and director Amanda Kramer even made a musical film to go with it.
