About the album

After a couple of very loud years, Madonna decided the boldest move was to lower her voice. For her sixth album she went looking for R&B's hottest producers of the moment, Babyface, Dallas Austin and Dave Hall, and brought in Nellee Hooper for a taste of the British club scene, where dub was all the rage. She promoted it on television and at the American Music and Brit Awards.

The result is warm, late-night pop, built on guitars, keyboards, programmed drums and strings, with songs about romance, heartache, desire and regret. "Secret" sets the unhurried tone, "Human Nature" answers her critics with a raised eyebrow, "Bedtime Story" drifts somewhere dreamier, and "Take a Bow" closes the record with a sweeping ballad.

It topped the chart in Australia, went top five in Canada, the UK and the US, and earned a Grammy nod for Best Pop Album; critics have since come to rank it among her very best. She cancelled the planned tour to prepare for Evita, which is as good an excuse for not visiting as we've ever heard.
