About the album

Rock records about America tend to arrive in a pickup truck. Lost Americana comes in a convertible with the radio flipping between stations, from '80s new wave synths to acoustic guitar ballads, pop punk and rap, sometimes within the same song.

MGK made it with his long-time crew of Nick Long, Stephen Basil and Brandon Allen. "Outlaw Overture" opens in two halves, glittering synths giving way to a campfire ballad, and "Cliché" is a big, sunlit singalong. "Starman" borrows the chorus of Third Eye Blind's "Semi-Charmed Life," with Stephan Jenkins himself inviting MGK over to work on it. "Sweet Coraline" grew out of a chance encounter with a fan on a New York street, a story Travis Barker told him to turn into a song, and the closing "Orpheus," co-written with Megan Fox, casts MGK as the mythical musician on his way to the underworld.

Slant praised its balance of intimacy and spectacle, and PopMatters heard the whole arc of American pop in it. On soda pop bottle vinyl it looks exactly as fizzy as it sounds, though we'd advise against trying to open it.
