Lovage's 2001 trip-hop lounge album as a 2LP set: Dan the Automator's beats with Mike Patton and Jennifer Charles on vocals and Kid Koala on turntables.
This 2LP set gives the album's slow, plush grooves room to breathe across four sides. It's Lovage's sole album, and it reached No. 37 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart.
Every so often a producer invents an alter ego and the alter ego turns out to have better ideas. Dan the Automator, here as the smooth-talking Nathaniel Merriweather (a persona he first used with Handsome Boy Modeling School), dreamed up Lovage as a lounge-noir record for late nights and low lights.
He brought in Faith No More's Mike Patton and Elysian Fields singer Jennifer Charles to trade vocals, and Canada's own Kid Koala to scratch and sample. "Pit Stop (Take Me Home)" is a slinky duet, "Book of the Month" and "Strangers on a Train" play like film noir, "Lifeboat" drifts, and "Archie & Veronica" turns a comic strip into a velvet-voiced torch song. Dan produced and mixed the lot, with skits and spoken asides keeping the tongue firmly in cheek. Charles co-wrote much of it, and Patton shares credits on "Pit Stop" and "Archie & Veronica."
The project later went on a 13-city US tour with Kid Koala in tow. The sleeve borrows its look from Serge Gainsbourg's N° 2, which tells you roughly how seriously to take the candlelight.
