Lorde's 2017 second album, a heartbroken, house-party-at-3-a.m. masterpiece with "Green Light," "Liability" and "Supercut."
Melodrama went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and earned Lorde an Album of the Year Grammy nomination. She made it with Jack Antonoff, and "Green Light," "Perfect Places" and "Supercut" turned up on just about every best-of-the-decade list going.
Gifted New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde was still a teenager when the indelible single "Royals" and her debut album, Pure Heroine, lit up the charts worldwide in 2013, so it's not surprising that she felt the need to take a step back and process her newfound fame for a bit before embarking on album No. 2.
For good or ill, a rough breakup intervened during the interim and at least gave her some grist for the songwriting mill for what would eventually become Melodrama, which arrived to pretty much universal acclaim in June of 2017. In Lorde's own words, this is "a record about being alone (and) heartbreak and solitude." Built around one long, messy night out, from the dancefloor euphoria of "Green Light" to the quiet devastation of "Liability," it's the kind of record you live inside for a whole summer.
