About the album

Some bands spend a whole career chasing the big one; Live, from York, Pennsylvania, found theirs on album number two. The songs came together at Pachyderm Recording Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, with Talking Heads' Jerry Harrison producing, and were mixed at Music Head Studios in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, before mastering at Sterling Sound in New York. It came out on Radioactive in April 1994.

Ed Kowalczyk's voice goes from a plaintive hush to a full roar, and the band pull off the epic sound they were after. "Selling the Drama" and "I Alone" set things alight early, "Lightning Crashes" builds into one of the decade's great slow burns, and "All Over You" and "Iris" show the band's tender side. Side D adds "Hold Me Up" from the original sessions, the later single "We Deal in Dreams" and "Susquehanna," an unheard 1993 recording.

Rolling Stone heard "expert players [who] drop musical smart bombs with unerring precision." The cover, Peter Howson's painting Sisters of Mercy, sold at Christie's in New York in 2005 for $186,000, making it one of the few rock sleeves to outperform most pension plans.
