Leonard Cohen's 1967 debut album: "Suzanne," "So Long, Marianne," "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye" and "Sisters of Mercy."
Montreal poet Leonard Cohen arrived fully formed on his debut, and its songs have been covered by everyone from Judy Collins to Nina Simone. It spent nearly a year and a half on the UK chart.
Leonard Cohen was already a celebrated Canadian poet and novelist when he moved to New York and started setting his words to music. Judy Collins' recording of "Suzanne" opened the door, and producer John Simon helped him make a debut that sounds like nothing else from 1967: hushed, spare and hypnotic, with Cohen's deep voice and nylon-string guitar at its heart.
"Suzanne," "So Long, Marianne" and "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye" are among the most beloved songs of the century, and "Sisters of Mercy," "Master Song" and "The Stranger Song" are just as spellbinding. A Montreal original and an essential Canadian record.
