Kurt Vile's 2018 album Bottle It In as a 2LP set in a gatefold jacket, with "Loading Zones," "Bassackwards" and guests Kim Gordon, Cass McCombs and Mary Lattimore.
Matador's 2LP set comes in a gatefold jacket with custom inner sleeves and a download card. Pitchfork singled out the ten-minute "Bassackwards" as its highlight, and the album drew a Metacritic score of 78.
Kurt Vile doesn't really do studio lockdowns. He made Bottle It In in bits and pieces across the U.S., ducking into a studio straight off tour for a day or two, sometimes alone, sometimes with a band, then heading home to his family in Philadelphia and back out again. He called it keeping everything like everyday life, and the album has exactly that easy, rambling feel.
"Loading Zones" is a sunny ode to parking for free in Philly, "Bassackwards" drifts for ten woozy, psychedelic minutes, and the title track stretches out even further. He covers "Rollin with the Flow," the Jerry Hayes song Charlie Rich made famous, and "Mutinies" is a song he started as a teenager and kept rewriting for decades. Kim Gordon, Cass McCombs, harpist Mary Lattimore and Warpaint's Stella Mozgawa all drop by, alongside his band the Violators.
"Hysteria" was written on the way to a session, and both it and "Cold Was the Wind" are about his fear of flying. Which makes this, we'd suggest, a very good record for a long drive.
