Kruder & Dorfmeister's 1996 DJ-Kicks mix as a 2LP set: trip hop and jazzy drum and bass from Thievery Corporation, Tango, Shantel and more.
This 2LP set presses highlights of the Vienna duo's DJ-Kicks mix across four sides. It remains one of the best-loved entries in !K7's long-running series, a snapshot of the mid-90s downtempo moment.
In the mid-1990s Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister were the producers everyone wanted to remix them, and their Vienna studio sound, all slow-motion beats, dub bass and velvet atmospheres, was spreading across the world's chill-out rooms. When Studio !K7 asked them for an instalment of DJ-Kicks, they built a mix that drifts from trip hop into jazzy drum and bass without ever raising its voice.
The vinyl gathers key moments from that mix. Small World's "Livin' Free" sets the mood, Omni Trio's "Trippin' on Broken Beats" picks up the pace, and Hardfloor's "Dubdope" fills a whole side with deep, rolling groove. JMJ & Flytronix's "In Too Deep" and Shantel's "Bass and Several Cars" glide on side three, while Tango's "Spellbound" and an early Thievery Corporation cut, "Shaolin Satellite," close things out in a haze.
It helped make DJ-Kicks a name collectors trust, and it still works exactly as intended at the end of a long evening. We've played it in the shop on slow afternoons; nobody has complained, though the queue at the till does seem to move at about 90 beats per minute.
