King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard's 2017 microtonal trip Flying Microtonal Banana on lucky rainbow eco-mix vinyl, recycled wax where every copy is a different colour: "Rattlesnake" and "Nuclear Fusion."
This lucky rainbow eco-mix pressing is made from recycled vinyl, so every copy comes out a unique colour, with a download card tucked inside. The album itself opened the band's famous five-albums-in-one-year run of 2017 and kicked off their trilogy of microtonal records.
Most bands promise a new album and then take three years. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard promised five in 2017 and delivered all of them, starting with this one. The Melbourne six-piece had their guitars refitted for microtonal tuning, which lets the notes slide into the gaps between the usual Western scale, and the result sounds like a psychedelic garage band jamming in an Istanbul bazaar.
"Rattlesnake" sets the tone with a hypnotic, repeating riff and a chant that won't leave your head, "Melting" and "Open Water" swirl with Stu Mackenzie's flute and wobbling guitars, "Sleep Drifter" floats, and "Nuclear Fusion" and the title track close things out in a heady, droning groove. Melbourne artist Jason Galea, who has drawn every one of the band's covers, supplied the art.
Since then their run of genre-hopping has passed 28 studio albums. Having the guitars refitted for the occasion shows a level of commitment most of us reserve for a kitchen renovation.
