Journey's 1981 album Escape, remastered on 180g vinyl, with "Don't Stop Believin'," "Open Arms," "Who's Crying Now" and "Stone in Love."
This 40th anniversary edition is remastered on 180g vinyl, with the new vinyl produced by Steve Perry and John Jackson. Escape topped the Billboard 200 and in 2021 was certified Diamond for ten million US sales.
Escape was the first Journey album with keyboardist Jonathan Cain, who'd joined from The Babys, and you can hear the difference from the first piano notes. Cain, Steve Perry and Neal Schon wrote nearly everything together, while Kevin Elson, a former Lynyrd Skynyrd sound technician, and one-time Queen engineer Mike Stone produced.
"Don't Stop Believin'" needs no introduction, though it peaked at No. 9 the first time around and kept climbing for decades in films, TV finales and every bar with a jukebox. "Who's Crying Now" went to No. 4, "Open Arms" to No. 2, and "Still They Ride" is a soft, mournful ballad. "Stone in Love" became a rock radio staple, and Schon's Roland guitar synthesizer adds shimmer to "Open Arms." Stanley Mouse, of Grateful Dead poster fame, drew the cover, and Bob Ludwig handled the original mastering.
Kerrang! readers voted it the greatest AOR album of all time in 1988, and Classic Rock agreed twenty years later. It was even turned into an Atari 2600 game in 1982, which is more than can be said for most of the records in our back room.
