The Jimi Hendrix Experience's 1967 second album Axis: Bold as Love in its original mono mix on 200g vinyl, with "Little Wing," "Spanish Castle Magic" and "Castles Made of Sand."
This numbered 200g edition restores the original mono mix, mastered all-analog from the mono tapes. The album reached the top ten in the UK and US, went platinum, and Rolling Stone ranks it No. 92 of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Seven months is not long to follow a debut like Are You Experienced, but that's all the time the Experience took. They were back at Olympic Studios in London within days of finishing the first record, with Chas Chandler producing and Eddie Kramer engineering, and the first song they worked on was Noel Redding's own "She's So Fine."
Hendrix's songwriting takes a big step here. "Little Wing," his first time playing through a rotating Leslie speaker, was his impression of the Monterey Pop Festival put into the form of a girl; "Spanish Castle Magic" draws on his years in R&B bands, and "If 6 Was 9" and the title track stretch out into full psychedelia. Graham Nash even turns up, stamping his feet on a drum riser for percussion.
With a deadline looming, Hendrix, Chandler and Kramer remixed most of side one in a single overnight session. Mono suits it; there's nowhere for the guitar to hide, and it never wants to.
