Iron Maiden's 1983 album Piece of Mind, Nicko McBrain's debut behind the kit, with "The Trooper," "Flight of Icarus" and "Revelations."
Piece of Mind reached No. 3 in the UK and went platinum on both sides of the Atlantic, and "The Trooper" is one of the great heavy metal anthems.
Iron Maiden locked themselves in an out-of-season hotel in Jersey, rehearsed in its restaurant, then flew to Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas to record. It sounds like a band on a winning streak, which they were: The Number of the Beast had just made them stars, and new drummer Nicko McBrain was raring to go.
McBrain announces himself straight away with the thunderous intro to "Where Eagles Dare." From there it's classic after classic: "The Trooper" gallops into the Charge of the Light Brigade, "Flight of Icarus" soars, "Revelations" is Bruce Dickinson at his most dramatic, and "To Tame a Land" turns Frank Herbert's Dune into an epic closer.
For many Maiden fans this is the lineup, and the album, at their very best.
