Why you'll love it

This Rough Trade LP puts the Indiana band's second album on vinyl as Dave Cobb recorded it in Nashville. "Sedona" led the way as the first single, with shared lead vocals and big harmonies all over the record.

About the album

Houndmouth come from New Albany, Indiana, just across the Ohio River from Louisville, and they sound like a band raised on old records and long drives. For their second album they went to Low Country Sound in Nashville to work with Dave Cobb, the Nashville producer known for his work with Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson, and Rough Trade put it out in March 2015.

Matt Myers, Katie Toupin, Zak Appleby and Shane Cody trade lead vocals and pile on the harmonies, and Cobb keeps the sound warm, roomy and close to live. "Sedona" rolls in with a loping groove and a singalong chorus, "Otis" and "Black Gold" swagger, "15 Years" brings the soul, and "My Cousin Greg" and "Gasoline" show off their knack for a story. "Darlin'" closes the record on a quieter, sweeter note, with Toupin's voice front and centre.

It's a joyful blend of rock, soul, folk and country, the kind of album that suits a summer porch as well as a winter kitchen. They named it after neon, but it plays more like a jukebox in a roadhouse at closing time.
