Hawkwind's 1975 space rock epic Warrior on the Edge of Time as a half-speed master, with a fold-out poster and a colour printed inner sleeve.
This Atomhenge edition is a half-speed master pressed in the EU, packed with a four-panel poster. The album was Hawkwind's highest-charting studio record in the UK, peaking at No. 13, and it carries Lemmy's last turn on bass with the band.
Most bands like a few months to make a concept album. Hawkwind, booked for a North American tour and short of new material, went into Rockfield Studios in Wales in March 1975, laid down the backing tracks in about three and a half days, then finished the overdubs and mixing at Olympic in London in roughly three more. Atco issued it in North America that May, just as the band arrived for the tour.
The concept comes from fantasy author Michael Moorcock, who wrote many of the words and built the album loosely around his novel The Eternal Champion. "Assault and Battery" melts into "The Golden Void," "Magnu" rides a hypnotic, galloping groove, "Kings of Speed" bolts out of the gate with Moorcock lyrics, and Simon House's "Spiral Galaxy 28948" drifts deep into the cosmos.
Dave Brock, Nik Turner, Simon House and Lemmy all leave their fingerprints here, and the speed of the sessions gives it the push of a band playing at full tilt with a sci-fi author in the passenger seat. It also comes with its own mythology, which saves everyone a trip to the library.
