About the album

Este, Danielle and Alana Haim spent two years on the road after Days Are Gone, then came home, took a nap and went straight into the studio. The breakthrough came from an odd place: the producers of Trainwreck asked for a song, and the sisters turned out "Little of Your Love" in under a week. It never made the film, but it got the album moving.

They cut it between Valentine Studios, a 1970s room in Valley Village, Los Angeles, and Ariel Rechtshaid's home studio, with Rechtshaid and Rostam Batmanglij producing alongside Danielle. "Want You Back" struts on a clipped, harmony-stacked chorus, "Nothing's Wrong" and "Ready for You" are pure California radio, and "Right Now" builds from a whisper to a pounding drum-circle finale. "Night So Long" closes the album proper in a hush.

Paul Thomas Anderson filmed a documentary of the sessions, Valentine, and directed videos for three of its songs. He took an interest after learning the sisters' mother had once been his art teacher, which is by some distance the best return on an art class we've ever heard of.
