About the album

After Dookie made them stars and a long arena tour made them homesick, Green Day cancelled the European leg, went home to their families and kept writing. When they reconvened at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles with Rob Cavallo, they had a pile of songs and no intention of making them all sound the same.

So Nimrod roams. "Nice Guys Finish Last" and "Hitchin' a Ride" are tight, swaggering punk-pop, "Platypus (I Hate You)" is pure hardcore, "King for a Day" brings out the horns and the ska, "Last Ride In" is a surf instrumental, and songs like "Redundant" find Billie Joe Armstrong writing about maturity, reflection and fatherhood. Then there's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," just Armstrong, an acoustic guitar and a string section. Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool keep everything else tight.

It went triple platinum in Australia, and critics praised Armstrong's songwriting and the band's range. "Good Riddance" has since soundtracked a TV farewell, countless graduations and roughly every slideshow ever assembled, and we've long since stopped counting the customers who hum it at the till.
