Funkadelic's 1978 P-Funk masterpiece One Nation Under a Groove as a deluxe LP plus 12" set, with the bonus EP tracks and a rare 11-minute title track.
This Charly deluxe edition pairs the original album with a second disc of the bonus EP tracks and a rare 11-minute "One Nation Under a Groove," newly mastered by Pete Reynolds with lacquers cut at AIR Studios. The album was Funkadelic's biggest, topping Billboard's R&B albums chart and going platinum.
By 1978 George Clinton was running two bands, a mothership and a small army of musicians, and Funkadelic was the one with the fuzz pedals. Recorded at United Sound in Detroit, One Nation Under a Groove is where the guitars and the grooves finally met in the middle, and it's the first Funkadelic album with keyboardist and songwriter Walter "Junie" Morrison on board.
The title track is an irresistible invitation to the dance floor, "Groovallegiance" glides, and "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" answers its own question with a wall of Hendrix-style guitar. "Into You" is a slow, sweet glide, "Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll!)" struts, and the bonus material adds "Lunchmeataphobia" and a live "Maggot Brain" from Monroe, Louisiana. Pedro Bell's wild cartoon artwork is restored here in full, with John Masouri's sleeve notes on the insert.
AllMusic called it the best realization of Funkadelic's ambitions, and its riffs have been mined by rock and rap acts ever since. The flag on the cover is planted firmly in the groove, and as far as we know, nobody has ever successfully removed it.
