About the album

After eight years away, Sade came back in 2000 with a record named after the romantic reggae style Sade Adu grew up listening to in London. Lovers Rock lets go of the jazz trappings of the earlier albums in favour of something sparer and warmer: soul, R&B, folk and dub, with gentle reggae flourishes underneath and plenty of room for that voice to breathe.

It's a concept album about love in all its moods, joyful and wounded, with a few pointed political turns along the way ("Slave Song," "Immigrant"). "By Your Side" became one of the band's most-loved songs, "King of Sorrow" one of their most aching, and the whole thing sounds gorgeous on this half-speed cut.
