Fugazi's 1993 breakthrough In on the Kill Taker, with "Smallpox Champion," "Rend It" and "Public Witness Program."
In on the Kill Taker is Fugazi's most ferocious and wide-ranging record, and their first to land on the Billboard chart, all on their own Dischord label.
Here's a band that played five-dollar all-ages shows and turned down major labels, and still ended up on the Billboard chart. In on the Kill Taker was Fugazi's breakthrough, and they did it entirely their way, on Dischord, the Washington label Ian MacKaye co-founded.
They tried a session with Steve Albini first, then went back to Inner Ear Studios with Ted Niceley to get it right. The result is their most aggressive record, and their most adventurous: "Facet Squared" crashes open, "Smallpox Champion" and "Rend It" snarl, "Public Witness Program" barrels along, and "Last Chance for a Slow Dance" closes with a long, bruised exhale.
MacKaye and Guy Picciotto trade vocals and guitar lines like sparring partners while Joe Lally and Brendan Canty hold it all down. It's post-hardcore at its most essential.
