Foxygen: We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic [JAGJAGUWAR]

Why you'll love it

This Jagjaguwar LP comes with a download card. NME said it bursts with lovable eccentricities without ever trying too hard, and "Shuggie" and "San Francisco" led the way as singles.

About the album

Sam France and Jonathan Rado sound like they found a box of their parents' records and decided to live in it. On their third album the duo from California blend 60s rock, soul, French pop and AM radio into something giddy and entirely their own.

Richard Swift produced and mixed it, and played a small orchestra's worth of instruments himself, from piano and drums to Mellotron, theremin and glockenspiel. "In The Darkness" opens like a tiny overture, "No Destruction" ambles along with a lopsided grin, "San Francisco" is a sweet, swaying singalong, "Shuggie" shifts gears every few bars, and "Oh No 2" closes things in a hazy glow. Under the Radar heard old AM hippie rock, Motown, soul and acid rock all in the mix, and 90FM's Christian Taylor reckoned fans of the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed would find plenty to love.

It's the kind of record that makes you want to dig out everything it borrows from. Two musicians making a record that sounds like 1969 in 2013 is either time travel or a very thorough record collection, and we have our suspicions.
