About the album

Sam Shepherd has a doctorate in neuroscience, so if anyone knows how music lands on the brain at two in the morning, it's him. For the Late Night Tales series, the Floating Points producer and Eglo Records co-founder skipped the obvious club bangers and built a patient, deeply personal mix of records that shaped him.

It drifts from Sarah Davachi's drones and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's synth shimmer to Brazilian jazz-funk from Azimuth, orchestral soul from William S. Fischer and the spiritual jazz of Max Roach. "Glowin'" and "Express Your Love" bring warm grooves, an excerpt of "Moments in Love" floats past, and Shepherd's own pieces stitch the whole thing together so it plays like one long exhale.

Pitchfork's Andy Beta praised its consistent, unhurried mood, and Resident Advisor noted how many of its 17 tracks are wonderfully rare. Tracking down all those originals would take years and a sturdy wallet; this way nobody has to stay up past two o'clock.
