About the album

The title character exists, sort of. Someone in the studio remarked that Yoshimi P-We of the Japanese bands Boredoms and OOIOO sang like she was battling monsters, Wayne Coyne added the word pink, and a story was born. P-We even turns up on the record. Whether the result is a concept album is still debated; Coyne says no, the first four tracks say maybe.

Working with producer Dave Fridmann, the Lips leaned into electronics, acoustic guitars and rhythms borrowed from hip hop and Top 40, and wrapped it all around songs about love, mortality and artificial emotion. "Do You Realize??" is the big-hearted anthem, "Fight Test" and "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1" are bittersweet pop, and "Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Planitia)" took the Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The four bonus LPs trace the songs from first chords to finished versions, add a Japanese-language take of the title track and the SpongeBob song, and throw in covers of The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" and a live "Fight Test" from WXRT.

The album was adapted into a stage musical in 2012, and the band toured it start to finish from 2023 to 2025. Twenty years on, the robots remain undefeated in our shop's dusting rota.
