FKJ's Just Piano, eight solo piano pieces from the French multi-instrumentalist, including "Sundays," "Anthem" and "Cashew."
This LP comes in a gatefold jacket, and it's FKJ with the loop pedals switched off: eight unhurried pieces for solo piano. It first came out digitally in August 2021 and arrived on vinyl in May 2022.
Most people know Vincent Fenton as a one-man band, building songs live on stage from loops of guitar, bass, keys and saxophone, as he did with Masego on the improvised hit "Tadow." Strip all that away, sit him at a piano and you find the melodic instinct that holds everything else up.
Just Piano is exactly that. The French-born, half New Zealander musician trained as a sound engineer for film, and you can hear it in how close and warm the instrument sounds. "Sundays" and "Last Hour" drift like late-morning daydreams, "Anthem" lifts a little higher, and "Meeting Again In The Void" and "Cashew" lean towards jazz chords and neo-soul colours without ever breaking the hush. "G.F." and "Fee" are short, tender sketches, and the closing "PE" lets the last chord ring out until the room goes quiet. It's the kind of record that rewards a good pair of speakers and a cup of something warm.
It sits nicely alongside his festival work at Coachella and Lollapalooza as proof of how much he can do with very little. Put it on for a slow Sunday; it's also excellent at making a messy kitchen feel like a jazz bar.
