Explosions in the Sky's 2001 post-rock classic in a remastered anniversary edition on violet vinyl, the album's first time on coloured vinyl: "Greet Death" and "The Moon Is Down."
This anniversary edition is remastered, cut by Bob Weston and pressed on violet vinyl, the first time this album has appeared in colour. It was the Texas band's first record for Temporary Residence and the one that set the template for their soaring, wordless sound.
There's barely a word sung on this record, and it still says plenty. On their second album the Austin quartet took the quiet-loud dynamics of post-rock and gave them a big, beating heart: three guitars weaving together, drums building like weather, and songs that rise and crash like waves.
"Greet Death" opens with a slow-burning swell, "Yasmin The Light" shimmers, and "The Moon Is Down" takes its name from John Steinbeck's novel. "Have You Passed Through This Night?" carries one of the band's rare spoken passages, a sample of narration from The Thin Red Line, and "With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept" closes things gently. David Logan's cover art draws on the legend of the Angels of Mons. The band recorded and mixed it in Washington, DC, in December 2000.
It still sounds immense, and it's the record many fans name as the place to start. It's one of the few records in the shop with almost no lyrics and a 14-word title, which we think evens out.
