Explosions in the Sky's 2007 album All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone as a 2LP set with an etched fourth side, with "Welcome, Ghosts" and "The Birth And Death Of The Day."
This 2LP set puts the music on three sides, with an etching based on the cover art on side D. It's the Austin band's fifth album, six long instrumentals that build from a hush to a roar.
The title comes from a line Gena Rowlands says in John Cassavetes' A Woman Under the Influence, just after her children have left for school, and that mix of tenderness and ache runs right through the record. The four-piece from Austin, Texas recorded it in Minnesota over the summer of 2006 and announced it was finished that October.
"The Birth And Death Of The Day" takes its name from a passage in Steinbeck's East of Eden and opens the album in a storm of guitars, "Welcome, Ghosts" builds from a glimmer to a roar, and "It's Natural To Be Afraid" takes up a whole side as it unfolds patiently, then crashes. "What Do You Go Home To?" brings in piano, "Catastrophe And The Cure" surges, and "So Long, Lonesome" closes on one of the band's loveliest melodies. Longtime collaborator Esteban Rey drew the artwork, and an early edition added a bonus CD of remixes of all six tracks.
They played "Welcome, Ghosts" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien the day the album came out, then toured America with Eluvium and later the Smashing Pumpkins. There isn't a single word sung on it, which hasn't stopped it saying rather a lot.
