Elliott Smith's 1998 major label debut XO: "Waltz #2 (XO)," "Baby Britain," "Sweet Adeline" and "Independence Day."
XO is one of the finest singer-songwriter albums of the 90s, pairing Elliott Smith's intricate, Beatlesque melodies with richer, fuller arrangements.
Following his Oscar-nominated song for Good Will Hunting, Elliott Smith signed with DreamWorks and expanded his hushed home-recorded sound with piano, strings, horns and full-band arrangements while keeping his intimate, double-tracked vocals.
"Sweet Adeline" bursts from a quiet start into a gorgeous full-band swell, "Waltz #2 (XO)" is one of his signature songs, "Baby Britain" is jaunty and catchy, and "Independence Day" and "Bottle Up and Explode!" are bright, beautiful pop.
